App Store revenue grows 18 percent in December, Google Play slows down

Wider Apple product range could be factor

App revenue from the iOS App Store grew 18 percent month-over-month in December, according to new data from analytics firm Distimo. Revenue from Google Play apps was up a comparable 17 percent. Significantly, however, Google Play has usually been outpacing the App Store for the past two years, which could mean that Play sales are flattening out, if December's figures aren't an anomaly.

Sales at the App Store and Google Play tend to spike in December, since that's when many people receive new phones or tablets as gifts and want to buy apps to take advantage. Apple may have done well last month because of its improved iOS device range, which included cheaper but still contemporary hardware -- namely the iPhone 5c and Retina iPad mini -- to complement its flagships.

I have a Kindle and also an iPad. The availabliity of apps between these two are night and day. It's worth it to pay extra $200 or $300 just to get an iPad.
