Post-CES smartphone launches from Sony offer modest specifications

Sony has launched two more devices in its Xperia smartphone range, though unlike the Xperia Z1S shown at CES, the pair appear to be more modest offerings. The Xperia T2 Ultra boasts a 6-inch 720p display with Triluminos and Mobile Bravia Engine 2 for mobile, while the Xperia E1 opts for a smaller and lower-resolution 4-inch 800x480 screen.

Similar to the Xperia T, the T2 Ultra has a rear-facing 13-megapixel Exmor RS camera with LED flash and autofocus, a 16x digital zoom, and 1080p video recording, with a 1.1MP front counterpart. Inside, the T2 Ultra has a 1.4GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor with 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage, a 3,000mAh battery, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, MHL, and LTE connectivity. Aside from the pre-loaded Sony Entertainment Network software, the Android 4.3 device is also PlayStation certified and includes a Walkman application.

Using a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor and also running Android 4.3, the Xperia E1 has a lower-resolution 3-megapixel rear camera with 4x zoom, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage supported by a microSD card slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and the ability to connect to a 3G cellular network. The Sony Entertainment Network apps also make an appearance on the Xperia E1, and though it does not have the PlayStation certification, it does include handwriting recognition and a dedicated key for the Walkman app.

Sony did not reveal when or where the devices will ship, nor their prices, but considering the specifications and the listing of dual-SIM versions, the devices are likely to be aimed towards emerging markets. Availability and pricing will probably be detailed by Sony closer to Mobile World Congress next month.
