HP retries to gain footing in smartphone market with India launch

Hewlett Packard is slowly moving back to the smartphone market, starting with two voice-enabled tablets destined for India. The Slate 6 and the Slate 7 VoiceTab, with six-inch 1280x720 and seven-inch 1280x800 IPS displays respectively, will both run on Android 4.2 and provide typical voice calling services, as well as appearing to offer a mid-range tablet experience.

Both the Slate 6 and Slate 7 will ship with a quad-core processor, though the speed and manufacturer was not revealed to Re/code, along with 16GB of storage that can be expanded by up to 32GB via microSD. The smaller Slate 6 will measure less than nine millimeters in thickness, with the Slate 7 hitting 9.5mm, with both using a rear-mounted 5-megapixel camera with flash, a front-facing 2-megapixel version, front-facing stereo speakers, and the option for dual SIM cards with 3G connectivity.

Though HP itself confirms that the devices will be shipping in India this February, it does not mention if the Slate 6 and Slate 7 will make its way to other countries. According to the report, HP showed the tablet behind closed doors to retailers at CES, and apparently "generated a very positive response," suggesting it will do in the future.
