Icons in Chrome update warn of tabs playing sound, using webcam

The latest update to Google Chrome allows Windows 8 users to try out the Chrome operating system from within the browser itself. The addition to Chrome 32, seen earlier in a developer version of the browser, is accompanied by a new set of icons that are designed to help the user monitor which tabs are creating noise, among other functions.

The tab bar adds three icons that will appear when the webpage is doing one of a number of actions, in order to help users find the right window to change or close items. A red "Record" dot will appear if it is using a connected webcam, while a blue rectangle will show when the tab is being casted to a television or other viewing device through Google Chromecast. The more-important speaker icon will show when a tab is playing audio, something that will help users irked by automatically-playing video or audio on sites.

Though not in the Mac and Linux versions, Windows 8 users will see the Chrome OS-styled view when using the browser in the Windows 8 "Metro" mode, according to the Chrome blog. The full-screen mode offers a task bar littered with various Chrome icons and an app launcher, with multiple Chrome windows containing their own tabs able to be opened inside the Chrome app itself. The mode could be considered a way for Windows 8 users to try out Chrome OS at length before paying for a Chromebook, a motive not directly mentioned by Google.

A beta preview of "Supervised Users" is also included, allowing for others to access the internet through dedicated accounts. Designed for family use, the administrator account can monitor the browsing activity of the supervised user accounts, with the option to block or restrict access to certain sites in the future. At the same time, the Safe Browsing malware warning has been updated to be more direct, with malicious downloads now appearing in the download tray with a confirmation it has been blocked.
