Valve: 10 million new users, redesign of Steam Controller imminent

updated 09:55 pm EST, Wed January 15, 2014

New controller eschews touchpad, adds D-Pad and ABXY diamond

Valve is in the middle of its annual Steam Dev Days developer conference, and it has revealed the addition of 10 million new users in just the last three months. Additionally, the forthcoming Steam controller will no longer have a touchscreen, and will see other modifications for backwards compatibility with legacy applications and other industry-standard controllers.

The new revision of the Steam controller ditches the touchscreen in favor of a directional pad (D-pad) and a more traditional ABXY diamond pattern of buttons. The controller will use AA batteries, allowing the user to use traditional rechargeables. Gyroscopes are integrated into the controller, but they are not currently implemented in firmware.

The company also reports that it has gained 10 million new users in the last three months. The new additions in the time leading up to the 2013 holiday sale grew the user base of the service to 75 million users. North America makes up 41 percent of sales, with Europe coming in second at 40 percent. Russia increased its sales year-over-year by 128 percent, making it the country with the largest growth by percentage.

    No touchscreen? Whodathunkit.

Well, kudos to Steam for at least trying to be innovative.
