Repairs for iPhone 5c displays now available in US Apple Stores

updated 06:34 pm EST, Mon January 20, 2014

Repair requires special equipment, costs $149 to fix rather than replace whole unit

As previously reported, Apple has now made available a service to repair damaged iPhone 5c screens rather than replacing the units outright in a number of its US stores. The new service prevents users having to change over to another phone, or send the device away to a remote repair facility. The service, which costs $149 for customers who do not have AppleCare+ on their iPhones, can take as little as one hour thanks to new, specialized equipment.

The new machine allows techs to perform advanced display calibration of the replacement displays in-store, ensuring a perfect fit -- and, say reports, saving the company significant amounts of money on repairs over replacement units. The machines are specially designed for the iPhone 5c only, and cannot be used with the iPhone 5s or other models. A handful of stores have been testing the calibration equipment as part of a pilot program.

Owners with AppleCare+ are entitled to up to two accidental-breakage incidents at a cost of $79 per instance. For iPhones, the extended warranty (which includes two full years of coverage and the accident policy rather than the one-year, no-accident included warranty) costs $99. Apple is also said to be experimenting with a similar program for its iPhone 5s devices, but there is not yet any firm date for rolling out that program on a widespread basis at present, presumably due to the additional complexity of dealing with the Touch ID unit that is part of the faceplate of the iPhone 5s.
