Microsoft rebrands SkyDrive as 'OneDrive' following trademark dispute

OneDrive name to spread across SkyDrive apps in near future

Microsoft has revealed the new name for its SkyDrive cloud storage service, six months after losing a trademark dispute over the name. Rebranded as "OneDrive," Microsoft will be updating the entire service to the name with little in the way of major changes, aside from updating to the new name in apps and moving existing users to the OneDrive.com domain.

The original trademark case in the United Kingdom revolved around the confusion over the Sky aspect of the name. British Sky Broadcasting convinced the court that it was possible for consumers to confuse Sky with SkyDrive, something compounded by Sky having previously operated its own cloud storage product titled "Sky Store & Share," as well as offering its own television-related apps. With the ruling affecting the service in all of Europe, an agreement was reached between Sky and Microsoft that allowed for the use of the SkyDrive name for a "reasonable period of time," in order for Microsoft to transition to a new brand.

In a blog post, Microsoft advised that the service "will continue to operate as you will expect" for normal SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro users, with content "available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business respectively as the new name is rolled across the portfolio."

One Drive to rule them all, One Drive to find them.
One Drive to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
In the land of Microsoft where the Windows lie.
