Adopts Flipboard-style approach to Facebook and regular news content
Facebook has unveiled Paper, the first app to come out of the social network's new Creative Labs division. The title is launching for the iPhone on February 3rd, and is mainly a Flipboard-style news reader, combining a person's News Feed with articles "from emerging voices and well-known publications," all divided into over a dozen themed categories. People will be able to customize which categories they track.
Each article will have cover art, and "unfold" for reading. Videos will autoplay in fullscreen; when looking at panoramic photos, tilting an iPhone will quickly scan the images from side to side. Users will also be able to zoom in on photos for more detail.
Separating Paper from other readers will be the ability to craft custom stories for Facebook. The company isn't going into much detail at this stage, but Paper-created stories may be more media-heavy, and people will be able to see live previews before submitting posts.
