Pebble launches smart watch app store on iOS from Monday

updated 07:28 pm EST, Sat February 1, 2014

App store allows up to 8 apps on Pebble smart watch at a time

Pebble will be launching its app store on Febrary 3rd, allowing developers to sell apps and watchfaces for the crowd-funded smart watch, the company has revealed. The iOS version of the companion app will be updated with the store on Monday, with a beta version of the store launching on Android shortly afterward, with the first apps set to go on sale from 10am PST, 1pm EST.

The Pebble is currently able to run a maximum of eight apps, with the developers advising Slashgear it is to prevent the menu becoming unwieldy, though it will offer a locker system for storing apps that are not being used. The store itself will offer apps under a number of categories, such as "Tools & Utilities," "Remotes," and "Fitness," with users able to search and apply ratings to apps and watchfaces.

The app store launch follows the shipping of the Pebble Steel, a version of the smart watch that replaces the plastic casing with a metal version, and ships with metal and leather straps. The Pebble Steel sells for $249, compared to the $150 of the original plastic version.
