OCZ Storage Solutions updates SSD warranty details

All OCZ Technology warranties not covered by Toshiba subsidiary

After Toshiba's acquisition of the assets of troubled SSD manufacturer OCZ Technology, it was believed that the business would continue on as it was prior to bankruptcy filings for the purpose of everyday operations. In one important aspect, however -- warranties -- the company will alter because of the terms of the bankruptcy proceedings. The new Toshiba subsidiary OCZ Storage Solutions is cutting warranty service on many older OCZ drives.

Many liabilities from the acquisition of OCZ's assets were left out of the deal, leaving some owners of OCZ Technology drives without much hope of repair in the case of a drive failure. The warranty page of the Toshiba-backed company's website lays out the situation for customers looking for solutions. "Please note, OCZ Storage Solutions -- A Toshiba Group Company -- is not the same organization as OCZ Technology Group. Through bankruptcy proceedings, Toshiba Corporation has acquired substantially all the assets from OCZ Technology Group -- but most liabilities, including outstanding warranties, have been excluded from that acquisition."

There are still a handful of drives that OCZ Storage Solutions will handle. Vector, Vertex and most RevoDrive storage branded with OCZ Technology will still have their three- to five-year warranties honored. In addition, Agility SSD drives will still retain their warranties through January 22, 2015. The most popular SSD lines that OCZ produced appear to be covered, outside of owners of the Octane and Petrol lines, which had been discontinued some time before the bankruptcy case occurred.

Information regarding warranties for power supplies and other components made by OCZ has not yet been addressed. AnandTech reports that OCZ has located a buyer for the power supply division, but more details won't be revealed for at least two weeks.
