iWatch may skip solar, use batteries from Samsung, LG, Tianjin

Claims questionable

Despite a New York Times report suggesting Apple is looking into solar power for the iWatch, the company will be sticking with lithium-ion batteries from Samsung SDI, LG Chem, and Tianjin Lishen Battery, sources tell the Korea Herald. "Apple will utilize LG Chem's stepped battery since it offers better longevity than others and can be applied for different shapes," one source says. "Stepped" batteries are layered, more efficient, and maximize space use.

The Herald's claims may be questionable however, in part because the paper has a hit-or-miss record with Apple rumors. Solar power and lithium batteries are also not mutually exclusive; solar could be used to simply trickle-charge a lithium battery, extending the time before a person has to deliberately recharge.

Sources also tell the Herald that Samsung is planning to release its Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch as soon as this month's Mobile World Congress, alongside the Galaxy S5. The expo begins on the 24th. LG is meanwhile believed to be adopting a stepped battery and OLED display for its upcoming watch; a prototype is allegedly already in testing, but LG is still considering launch dates.

Everyone keeps talking about Apple making a watch.

Meanwhile, I have yet to see one single news story saying that Apple is actually making a watch. All I see are posts about "the rumored iWatch" and what it's supposed to involve... yet I have yet to see any article with Apple stating that they are working on a watch.
