Google updates search with music videos, alters Android search app

Music videos given more prominence in related searches

Google has made two updates to search, for desktops as well as its Android search app. Web-based Google searches will now more prominently display YouTube videos for searches using musical terms, while the Android search app introduces a number of Google Now tweaks, with the option to set specific on-demand and TV providers in the search settings being the biggest change.

Searching for a song title or a combination of the artist and part of the title will bring up a large thumbnail at the top of search results, reports Search Engine Watch. Rather than being an embedded video, the thumbnail instead takes users to the YouTube, Dailymotion, or Vimeo page hosting the video itself, though the non-Google sources have a much smaller image displayed.

The Android search app will let users choose their preferred video and TV providers for improved video recommendations, reports Android Police. Google Now cards for appointment notifications have seen some tweaks, hotword detection has been enabled for British and Canadian English, refinements to setting alarms, new AirBNB reservation cards, a Winter Olympics 2014 card with medals and upcoming event details, and new animations for expandable card bundles are included. The home screen for the Nexus 5 has also been officially renamed to the Google Now Launcher. The update has started to roll out to users, though the more adventurous may find themselves downloading the APK for a faster update.
