Apple, Imagination extend deal for PowerVR graphics technology

Tech central to A-series processors in iOS devices

Imagination Technologies has announced a multi-year extension of its licensing deal with Apple, allowing continued access to the former's PowerVR technology. While the A-series chips used in the iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and iPod touch are internally designed by Apple, the company relies on PowerVR to drive the graphics portion of processing. Specific terms of the deal haven't been announced, but Apple will be paying licensing fees plus royalties for each chip including Imagination IP.

The news has helped inflate Imagination's share value on the London Stock Exchange. Had the deal fallen through, it would have been a serious blow to the company, since Apple is a major client and in fact owns a 10 percent stake. Apple in turn would've had to scramble to find a replacement technology, and redesign both iOS and processors to accommodate it.

The latest A-series chip, the A7, relies on PowerVR Series 6 graphics cores. Apple's half of the equation is a 64-bit, ARM-based CPU.
