Google, VMWare reveal enterprise Windows app service for Chrome OS

updated 06:53 am EST, Thu February 13, 2014

DaaS allows Chromebooks to run cloud-based Windows apps

Chrome OS users will be able to use traditional Windows apps in the future, Google has announced. Working with VMWare, the two companies have developed Desktop as a Service (DaaS) for enterprise users, allowing companies to run Windows apps on servers with the intention of letting Chrome OS devices connect and stream the content directly to the Chromebook or Chromebox.

Using the HTML5 Blast client from VMWare's Horizon View virtualization tools, the service connects to either a server located within the company or through a VMWare vCloud Service Provider Partner, which hosts the instance of the desktop, according to the Google Enterprise blog. The applications and data are stored on the remote server, rather than on the Chromebook.

Rajen Sheth, Director of Product Management for Chrome, advises that Chromebooks and the DaaS service combined will help companies manage the end-of-life of Windows XP, claiming "security vulnerabilities, application compatibility, and migration budgets will be a thing of the past."

The DaaS is available as a subscription service aimed at businesses, with Google adding a client to the Chrome Web Store shortly to make installation simpler for IT departments and users. There is no mention of a consumer-focused version of the service.
