Rumor: Samsung Galaxy S5 has fingerprint scanner, 16MP camera

updated 07:47 am EST, Tue February 18, 2014

Home button-mounted fingerprint scanner will unlock device, launch apps

Two leaks for the incoming Samsung Galaxy S5 suggest it will ship with a fingerprint scanner and a smaller-than-rumored rear camera. The new details, surfacing less than a week before Samsung's launch event at Mobile World Congress, claim the flagship smartphone will use a fingerprint reader built into the home button of the device, in a similar manner to the iPhone 5s.

The new claims from Sammobile state the device will show a real-time image of the fingerprint on the smartphone's display as it's being read. A total of 8 fingerprints can be registered to the device, with each print assignable to different tasks or apps, though at least one must be used to unlock the device. The report also claims the Galaxy S5 will avoid using on-screen buttons for navigation, instead relying on physical versions.

Meanwhile, an image from @evleaks, said to be a "test photo for AT&T," is being portrayed as proof that Samsung is not including a 20-megapixel camera sensor in the device. The test image, measuring 5318x2988, would relate to a 15.9-megapixel sensor, while EXIF data examined by Phone Arena notes it has an aperture of f/2.2, potentially helping it with low-light or nighttime photography.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S5 at its media event on February 24th. Electronista will be attending the event to try out the device, as well as anything else the company launches at the same time.
