T-Mobile eSIM allows cross-border travel with no roaming fees

Users billed for local data rates, abolishes roaming fees

Wireless provider T-Mobile today announced eSIM -- a SIM card designed to eliminate roaming costs between wireless devices transitioning between the US and Canada. When installed, customers benefit from local data rates for each country, as opposed to international roaming fees. T-Mobile will continue to announce additional countries that are supported by the program throughout 2014.

The company gives an example of a trucking company using "mapping services, video monitoring, email, fleet tracking software and vehicle diagnostics." Assuming 100MB of data per month, per truck while in Canada, the roaming cost could be as high as $200 per month -- the type of excess cost that would be eliminated using the eSIM.

Starting today, eSIM is available for businesses in the connected device market to integrate into their mobile-to-mobile solutions. The eSIM ships fully configured out-of-the-box for use with multiple international carriers, and can be pre-built into virtually any connected product.

Notably, T-Mobile already offers their unlimited data international roaming plan, which kicked in late last year. While the voice and texting rates are outrageously expensive, my wife has been taking advantage of unlimited data on her T-Mobile iPhone to make lengthy audio Facetime chats on a daily basis, which is really pretty impressive.
