updated 01:14 pm EST, Fri February 21, 2014

Free Nokia mapping app previously exclusive to Lumia 2520 tablet

Nokia will be expanding the availability of its HERE Maps to all Windows 8.1 devices, the company has confirmed. The free app, currently only available on the Nokia Lumia 2520, will soon be useable on all laptops, desktops, and tablets running Windows 8.1 or Windows RT, with the company also claiming the software will have a number of updates to improve performance.

The new app will be up to four times faster than before for loading city pages, with an offline maps mode said to load locations "as quickly as your computer can manage." New, higher-resolution imagery will be supported, improving the view of locations at high zoom levels. As a concession to desktop users, the app can be controlled via keyboard and mouse as well as a touchscreen. It will also keep a record of searches and routes previously researched, providing a list of places that can be sorted based on the distance from the user's location or their rating.
