Ford's Sync displacing Windows in favor of BlackBerry QNX?

updated 04:02 pm EST, Mon February 24, 2014

BlackBerry QNX may be faster, more accessible than aging Windows software

According to sources familiar with the matter, the Ford Motor Company will migrate its next-generation in-car Sync away from Microsoft's Windows. In its place will be beleagured BlackBerry's QNX at the core of the car's in-dash system. QNX will be less expensive than Windows, and will reportedly boost the speed of the next iteration of Sync.

Gartner analyst Thilo Koslowski said of the reported move that it "would be a huge infusion of trust and confidence to have BlackBerry and QNX expanding into a Ford. This is really the crown jewel in BlackBerry's crown and could make the rest of the company shine as well."

In an email to Bloomberg, Ford spokesperson Susannah Wesley didn't rebuff the claim, nor did she confirm it. "We do not discuss details of our work with others or speculate on future products for competitive reasons," said Wesley.

Apple is working with Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz, and the Nissan Motor Company to bring the iOS to in-car devices. Google is working with Nvidia, General Motors, Honda, and Hyundai to migrate Android to vehicles. BlackBerry QNX is currently installed in Volkswagen's Audi unit, and BMW. Microsoft software is in Kia, Fiat, some Nissan, and BMW automobiles.

Don't be surprised if Microsoft buys Blackberry, just so they can put Windows back on Ford.

It makes me wonder if the current version of Sync looks like Windows 8. If it does, you are already lost in the OS without even getting lost while driving.

so why didn't they look to iOS? Because they wanted to have continuity with Sync?
