New rugged device has wide range of radios, GPS, GLONASS

Panasonic today unveiled plans at Mobile World Congress to broaden its Toughpad range of rugged tablets with a new five-inch model. The new device is aimed for mobile workers who need a protected device that can handle voice and data in the field or in challenging environments, including the emergency services and public safety as well as logistics, factories and warehouses.

The five-inch Toughpad will be available with the Microsoft Windows Embedded 8 Handheld operating system, as well a model with Android. Peripherals may be attached to the Toughpad using fixing screws, or by way of the internally-accessible micro USB port. The rear of the device features an 8MP camera, with a 1.3MP front-facing camera. Connectivity is provided by 802.11ac, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, WCDMA, EV-DO, 3G, LTE, and HSPA+. Mapping and location services are provided through GPS, and GLONASS recievers. The battery is rated for 6,200mAh, with Panasonic claiming 14 hours of continuous use, or 1,000 hours of standby time.

No specific pricing has been provided. Availability is expected in "select European countries" in the fall.
