Z2 devices powered by SnapDragon 801 processor

At the Barcelona Mobile World Congress, Sony has taken the wraps off a trio of devices at its pre-expo keynote. Shown today by CEO Kazuo Hirai are the Xperia M2 midrange phone, and the premium Xperia Z2 smartphones coupled with the Xperia Z2 tablet.

The Xperia M2 has a 4.8-inch qHD display, driven by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor. The handset has 1GB of RAM, with 8GB of NAND flash storage. Battery life is unknown, but the capacity of it is 2330mAh. The device is no thicker than 8.6mm (0.28 inches). A dual-SIM variant, the Xperia M2dual will also be available as well, with easy SIM selection prior to making calls or sending texts.

The Xperia Z2 smartphone is waterproof up to 6.6 feet, and combines what the company calls its "best display, sound, camera and camcorder experience" in a 5.2-inch Full HD Triluminos display. The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, with 2.3GHz quad-core Krait CPUs and the Adreno 330 GPU with a shared 3GB of RAM. The battery is 3200mAh, giving the device long standby and talk time.

Sony has integrated the G Lens 20.7MP 1/2.3 Exmor RS for mobile image sensor into a rear shooter for the Xperia Z smartphone. The camera allows the device to capture video up to 4K resolution, using its SteadyShot technology.

The Xperia Z2 tablet has a 10.1-inch Full HD Triluminos display, also powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, with 2.3GHz quad-core Krait CPUs and the Adreno 330 GPU with a shared 3GB of RAM. Audio is provided by Sony's Front Surround audio technology, with the greater speaker separation providing a better stereo effect than the Z2 phone. The tablet is weighs 426 grams (15 oz) and is only 6.4mm (0.2 inches) thick. Connectivity is provided by Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and optionally LTE/3G. The camera isn't as good as the Z2 phone, and is an 8.1MP rear shooter, paired with a 2.2MP front-facing HD chat camera.

All three devices will be available in March. Pricing is not yet known. Electronista is live at the show; look for our hands-on of all three products.
