New line optimized for surveillance applications with video stuttering protections
Storage purveyor Western Digital today announced the availability of WD Purple, a purpose-built line of 3.5-inch, high-capacity hard drives for surveillance applications. Designed specifically for video surveillance units and other applications demanding high reliability, WD Purple hard drives are tailored for new and existing home and small business security environments, with up to eight hard drives and up to 32 high-definition (HD) video cameras. Shipping today, WD Purple hard drives are available in capacities from 1TB up to 4TB.
The drives include new improvements in areal density, with the new, more efficient Advanced Format Technology used to maximize storage per platter. With no clear standard, WD says it worked with surveillance partners to insure maximum compatibility across a wide range of surveillance applications and hardware. The company says the drives can also be used in conventional desktop environments, with enhanced reliability over its entry-level drives.
Shipping now through select distributors and resellers, WD Purple surveillance-class hard drives are covered by a three-year limited warranty. Suggested retail for the 3.5-inch 1TB drive, model number WD10PURX, is $90; the 2TB drive, model number WD20PURX, is $120; the 3TB drive, model number WD30PURX, is $160, and the 4TB drive, model number WD40PURX, is $200.
