Square testing new Pickup app for takeout food orders

updated 10:52 am EST, Wed February 26, 2014

Will allow people to preorder from digital menus

Mobile payment service Square is testing out a new app called Pickup, reports say. Priceonomics notes the app is currently in beta with some San Francisco restaurants, and lets people order takeout food in advance of showing up. This is possible because the app has access to participating restaurants' menus, and lets people pay through Square.

iOS and Android versions are in development. Screenshots of the iPhone edition reveal that it will be able to identify nearby Pickup-ready businesses, and estimate when an order will be ready. It's not clear when the app will reach a wider audience.
