Lenovo working with Ashton Kutcher on special-edition smartphone line

updated 04:13 pm EST, Fri February 28, 2014

Product development follows earlier collaboration on tablets

A line of smartphones designed in part by actor Ashton Kutcher is being worked on by Lenovo, the company reveals. Building on top of an existing partnership between Kutcher and the company in the co-design, release, and promotion of Android tablets last October, the special-edition smartphone range will apparently be launching later this year.

Kutcher is not working on designing circuitry for the devices, advised Lenovo Chief Marketing Officer David Roman to Recode, but he will be helping on managing the user experience with the device. "I know on one level, it sounds corny, but it is real," advised Roman. "He not only sees himself as an engineer, but he is an engineer. If he sees a problem, he wants to solve it."

While celebrity involvement with brands has usually been minimal, such as in the case of Alicia Keys with BlackBerry, Kutcher appears to be having a more hands-on approach. He studied biochemical engineering before modeling and acting, has co-founded a venture capital group, and have invested in a number of prominent technology companies.
