Loss of MHL, lower price point to help compete with Google Chromecast

Roku has updated its Streaming Stick, in what appears to be a move to compete against other streaming devices, and the Google Chromecast. The new Roku Streaming Stick is usable on a wider range of televisions than the previous model, thanks to a change away from Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL), as well as pricing it at half the cost of the original.

By moving to HDMI instead of using MDL, the new Streaming Stick will work with effectively any device with a HDMI port, instead of ones declared "Roku Ready" with MHL. Just like its full-sized streaming counterparts, it offers over 1,200 channels including video and music streaming services.

In a nod to the Chromecast, the supplied Wi-Fi remote control can be replaced by free apps for Android and iOS, with users able to "cast" their content from YouTube, Netflix, and other services, with extra features such as casting content from a computer to the TV also touted for the future.

Shipping in April, Roku is pricing the HDMI version of the Streaming Stick at $50, and has opened itself up for pre-orders.
