Twitch SDK allows players to stream game footage from mobile devices

Game video streaming service Twitch is hoping to expand the reach of its service into mobile gaming, from its existing PC and console efforts. The announced Twitch Mobile Software Development Kit will allow developers to add Twitch streaming to mobile titles, letting gamers broadcast their gameplay live, as well as capturing and archiving the video for future viewing.

The SDK will allow for video to be broadcast at three defined quality settings, similar to the desktop version. Aside from game footage and audio, it will also allow for video and audio to be captured by the mobile device's front-facing camera and either the built-in or an external microphone. "Robust chat options" are also said to be included, with emoticons, badges, and chat colors adding to the communication options between the broadcasting player and their audience.

"Our vision is to provide the Twitch community with the ability not only to view, but to broadcast live video game content wherever they are, whether they're on the go or in the living room," said Vice President of Marketing Matthew DiPietro, continuing "We've achieved that with our PC and console integrations, so the trifecta will soon be complete with our deep and concentrated foray into mobile broadcasting."

The new SDK is not the only foray into mobile Twitch has performed. The company already offers apps for iOS and Android for viewing content being broadcast on the service, with the install base reported to involve over 10 million users.
