ComiXology suffers security breach, requires password reset

updated 07:04 pm EST, Thu March 6, 2014

Warning e-mail from ComiXology states no payment details at risk

Digital comic book retailer ComiXology is asking all of its customers to reset their passwords, as a precautionary measure following an intrusion. An e-mail sent to users of the comic book store and reader app states that an "unauthorized individual" had gained access to a database containing usernames, e-mail addresses, and "cryptographically protected" passwords.

The company claims to have discovered the intrusion "in the course of a recent review and upgrade" of its security infrastructure. It has now "taken additional steps to strengthen our security procedures and systems," and writes that it will continue to improve it as time goes on.

While it is not clear how many users are affected by the incident, it is likely to be a fairly high number. TechCrunch reports that the retailer sold over 4 billion digital comic pages in 2013, regularly provides free comics to users, and while it offers comics from both Marvel and DC, it also operates customized apps for each of the publishing houses.
