Major online retailers open up pre-orders for March 14, 2014 release
The small form factor Asus Chromebox has gone up for pre-order at a handful of online retailers ahead of a March 14 release. Previously, the desktop machine was listed for a release in March without a firm date attached. Pre-orders cover only the Intel Celeron 2955U 1.4GHz-powered low-end option for the Google Chrome OS-based machine.
Amazon, Newegg and Tiger Direct have all posted pre-order listings for the device at the $179 price point. On top of the Haswell Celeron 2955U processor, the Chromebox features 2GB DDR RAM, Intel HD integrated graphics and a 16GB solid state drive. Anandtech reports that the units are not fanless, as was understood previously.
Pre-orders are not available for the Chromebox that features the Core i3 processor, but is said to be released on the same day. As previously stated, the Core i7 version that retails for $1,000 and is intended for business videoconferencing will not be made available in North America.
