Second-generation Kindle Paperwhite features reach first generation

Amazon has updated the software for the first generation of the Kindle Paperwhite, bringing it in line with features already available to the newer model. The free update, available both as a wireless download or a manual transfer over USB, introduces the Goodreads community rating and note sharing scheme to the e-reader, among other new additions to the device.

Personalized profiles for children under Kindle FreeTime is included, reveals Pocket-Lint, with younger users able to receive achievements for reaching various reading milestones. The Vocabulary Builder will automatically add words looked up in the dictionary which can then be used to quiz the reader using flashcards, while the Smart Lookup provides access to the dictionary, X-Ray, and Wikipedia when looking up a word or a character.
