Nokia X reaches 1M pre-order milestone in China after four days

Android-based Nokia smartphone sees high sales before release

Nokia's first attempt at an Android-based smartphone may be a success in one country before it's even been released, according to the company's social media accounts. The Nokia X, first shown at Mobile World Congress last month, has apparently received more than 1 million pre-orders in China alone, after being made available to customers just four days ago.

The posting on Weibo, spotted by GforGames, brags about the pre-order milestone, but stops short of predicting how many orders the smartphone will receive when it launches in the country on March 25th. The pre-orders also relate just to the core Nokia X, as the Nokia X+ and Nokia XL variants will not be out until the second quarter.

It is unclear how Nokia has managed to reach such a number of pre-orders in China, but there are a few clues. The handset is being sold for the equivalent of $122, making it an extremely cheap Nokia smartphone when compared to its Windows Phone stablemates. It could also be a sign of significant brand awareness in the country, one which until a few years ago, Nokia managed to maintain.

The Nokia X has a 4-inch 800x480 IPS display, backed by a dual-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. On the back is a 3MP fixed-focus camera, and though the forked Android implementation does not offer Google's own services, such as Google Play, it will provide access to other app stores, and will also ship with Nokia and Microsoft equivalents, such as HERE Maps, Outlook, and OneDrive.
