Microsoft reveals LTE-equipped Surface 2, ships tomorrow

64GB Surface 2 with LTE priced $130 over standard edition

Microsoft is preparing to ship a version of the Surface 2 with 4G LTE connectivity on AT&T's network tomorrow, six months after the company unveiled the updated device range. The 64GB model with LTE will cost $679, a premium of $130 over the standard 64GB model, with the tablet being sold via the Microsoft Store and Best Buy.

The Surface 2 with LTE is the same as the standard edition, except for offering cellular connectivity. It offers a 10.6-inch 1080p display backed by an Nvidia Tegra 4 processor with 2GB of RAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, a 10-hour battery life, 5-megapixel rear and 3.5-megapixel front cameras, stereo speakers, USB 3.0, and a microSD card reader. While it uses Windows 8.1 RT, it also ships with Microsoft Office 2013 RT, 200GB of OneDrive storage for two years, one year of free Skype calling and access via Skype Wi-Fi at hotspots in over 60 countries.

Despite the support for AT&T's high-speed network, the Surface 2 LTE will be shipping unlocked. ZDNet reports the tablet will work on 4G LTE bands 4, 7, and 17, as well as 3G UTMS on bands 1, 2, and 5, and quad-band 2G GSM support. While this directly correlates with AT&T's networking, there is some overlap with other carriers, such as T-Mobile's use of LTE 4 and UMTS 2 bands, though there is unlikely to be any real support from Microsoft in using T-Mobile's network.

While Microsoft offers a 32GB version of the Surface 2 for $449, it has not announced an LTE edition of the tablet, nor is there any mention of an LTE version of the Surface Pro 2.
