More Xperia devices added to Android KitKat update list by Sony

Sony is starting to roll out Android 4.4 to some of its smartphone range. As confirmed in November last year, the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, and Xperia Z Ultra are all receiving the Android KitKat update, though final timing depends on the market and carrier, with a company blog post also giving some hints as to when other Xperia devices will see the new mobile operating system.

The roll-out will add more than Android 4.4's performance updates and functionality changes, with a number of Sony-specific changes also included. A tweaked status bar and Quick Settings option will be more customizable and has been spruced up, with the overall user interface said to use a similar launch animation and live wallpaper options to its lock and home screen as the PlayStation 4. The update will also bring Sony's entire native app portfolio up to date, including the Messaging, MyXperia, Smart Connect, TrackID, and Sony Social Camera apps, a converged Sony media experience, and the ability to skin the device using up to 280 assets via downloadable "Xperia Themes" UI packs.

The previously-announced update for the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, and Xperia ZR is still taking place, but is scheduled for sometime in the second quarter. While timing has not been suggested, the post does reveal that owners of the Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia E1, and Xperia M2 will also see the KitKat update, with more details set to be revealed in the future.
