Huawei changes stance, will not ship dual-booting smartphones

New statement reverses Huawei CMO comments about dual-OS devices

Huawei will not be producing a smartphone that is capable of booting to two operating systems, the company has revealed. Responding to reports about comments made by Chief Marketing Officer Shao Yang, the manufacturer advised it is not currently planning the release of a device that will boot to Windows Phone as well as Android.

Speaking to Trusted Reviews, Yang advised "We are still committed to making Windows Phone devices." While he admitted that Windows Phone is a lower-priority for the company when compared to Android, Yang suggested "With Windows Phone, one direction for us - and one that we are now following - is dual OS. Dual OS as in Android and Windows together." The executive suggested it would be easier for consumers to adopt Windows Phone if they had the option to switch to it from an Android-focused device.

A statement sent to FierceWireless takes the opposite stance, claiming that the company "adopts an open approach towards mobile operating systems to provide a range of choices for consumers. However, most of our products are based on Android OS, and at this stage there are no plans to launch a dual-OS smartphone in the near future."

A Huawei spokesperson advised to the report the plans of the company had changed since Yang's comments, though did not explain why. Recently, Asus postponed its plans to ship a notebook that dual booted to Android and Windows, citing a change in policy at Microsoft that does not support multi-OS systems. An analyst also suggested there was pressure from Google, claiming "Google wants all-Android devices."

Huawei's press release states that Microsoft is "still a key global partner" and would continue to ship Windows Phone devices so long as consumers demand them.
