Executive reveals existing investment in smart watch software prevents use of Android Wear

Sony will not be using Google's Android Wear platform for its smart watches in the future, an executive has revealed. Ravi Nookala, head of Sony Mobile in the US, said in an interview that the manufacturer will continue to use its own SmartWatch platform for the immediate future, instead of switching to Google's recently-announced wearable device platform.

Speaking to CNET, Nookala explained "We've already invested time and resources on this platform, and we will continue in that direction." Sony's existing platform is itself based on Android, relying on apps from its own app store instead of Google Play, and is already on the second generation of device, the SmartWatch 2.

While Android Wear will not have support from Sony, Google is said to be working with Asus, HTC, and Samsung, among other manufacturers, with LG and Motorola already teasing their respective devices. Nookala does advise that, though the company will not use Android Wear, Sony will continue to "work closely" with Google over its Android-based products.

In the same interview, Nookala revealed sales of the Xperia Z1s were up 20 to 25 percent higher than the Xperia Z in the same period. "The momentum is there, we're doing better than our forecast," advised the executive.
