Despite not having announced it, Apple has probably already sold its 500 millionth iPhone, Forbes remarks. By the end of 2013, the company had recorded sales of 472 million phones. Since analysts are forecasting 38 million or more unit sales by the end of the current quarter, that should mean that Apple passed the 500 million mark earlier this month, if not in February.
The company regularly uses milestones in its promotional efforts, the most recent example being the 30th anniversary of the Mac. It hasn't concentrated much on sales figures for Mac or iOS devices though, reserving announcements about those for its quarterly financial results and press events.
Forbes adds that the pace of iPhone sales is still accelerating. While the platform is now facing stiff competition from Android phones -- which are outselling iPhones in many markets -- the most recent 100 million iPhone sales are estimated to have been achieved about two to six weeks faster than the previous 100 million.
