Photos show alleged test unit for next-gen iPhone

Details include larger chassis, protruding lens section

New photos posted on Chinese site Weibo may show a test unit for the iPhone 6. The images are said to have been leaked from Apple's primary manufacturer, Foxconn, but no other details are available. They are however consistent with recent rumors calling for a thin, iPad mini-like chassis paired with a much larger display. A lens ring appears to protrude from the test unit's camera, much like the Nexus 5 and other phones that have advanced optics such as image stabilization.

The authenticity of the photos is difficult to gauge. Many sources though have reported that Apple is planning to introduce not one but two new sizes of iPhone, typically 4.7 and 5.5 inches. The change is believed to be a response to trends in the smartphone market, which for years now have seen flagship devices measuring 4.5 inches or more. Until 2012 iPhone screens were no bigger than 3.5 inches; even that year's iPhone 5 only pushed dimensions to 4 inches.

    My hunch is that their marketing team will tell them to keep the current 4" model. Women will small hands will be turned off by anything larger and they're roughly 50% of the market. Apple may be preparing both 4.7" and 5" models and seeing which has the most appeal. If they're clever, they won't use the added size to go thinner. They'll put in a larger battery and promote a longer useful life. People who like big screens will also like that.

    Even if they change screen sizes in 2014, given past behaviour we're at least three years away from seeing the last of the 4" screen entirely.
