T-Mobile shutters employee discount Advantage Program

updated 04:21 pm EDT, Mon March 31, 2014

Move championed as part of the 'Uncarrier' initiative

T-Mobile CEO John Legere has announced in a blog post that it is no longer offering its Advantage Program to new customers, and will discontinue the program to existing users. The employer rate plan discount program used "employees as bargaining chips" to close contracts, and the CEO believes that the excision of the program helps with the company in "simplifying wireless for everyone."

Starting April 1, the benefit will be replaced with a T-Mobile reward card of $25 each time a employee purchases a new device, and eliminate monthly savings. Legere claims that even with the eradication of the discount program, that "fat corporate discounts" from other carriers are still eclipsed by the T-Mobile Simple Choice plan.

Actually... my off-contract family share plan on AT&T runs $145 for 3 lines with unlimited talk, text, and 10 GB data. With my employer discount, it's $121. T-Mobile's comparable plan is $120 with unlimited data. If you value unlimited data and truly need more than 10 GB of shared data, then they look like the better deal on paper. In reality their coverage here is unreliable and non-existent once I cross into the next county over. I truly have long admired T-Mobile and their pricing policies, but their CEO is spewing a lot of hyperbole lately.
