Nokia MD-12 uses hard surfaces for bass boosting

Despite the unveiling of the Lumia 930, Lumia 630, and Lumia 635 Windows 8.1 smartphones at Microsoft Build, Nokia still had something new to reveal for itself at its scheduled "more" event. The Nokia MD-12 is a portable mini speaker that connects to smartphones via Bluetooth with NFC pairing, which is able to use "acoustic bonding" with whatever surface it is resting on to provide a more powerful sound.

Nokia claims the MD-12 provides a "surprising amount of base for such a compact speaker," thanks to its use of a built-in vibrating actuator in the base to transmit low-frequency sound through hard surfaces. Weighing 180 grams (6.3 ounces) and housed in a brightly-colored Lumia-style casing, it offers enough power in its rechargeable battery to last for up to 15 hours of playback, and also includes the option to play audio from non-wireless sources via a wired connection.

The shipping date for the MD-12 is unknown, but it has been confirmed to cost 39 euro (53) when it does go on sale.
