Deal gives Amazon exclusive control of DC online distribution

Amazon today announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire digital comics vendor ComiXology for an undisclosed sum. ComiXology developed and distributes the engine used by most major comic book publishers in the United States, including Marvel and DC Comics for their privately-branded digital services.

David Naggar, Amazon vice president of content acquisition and independent publishing, said of the acquisition that Amazon has "long admired the passion comiXology brings to changing the way we buy and read comics and graphic novels. We look forward to investing in the business, growing the team, and together, bringing comics and graphic novels to even more readers."

Comixology was founded in 2007, and has over 200 million downloads as of the end of 2013. It offers a selection of more than 40,000 comic books and graphic novels across Android, iOS, Kindle, and Windows. The digital reader and store was launched in July 2009, with the iOS launch in April of 2010.

In September 2011, ComiXology's Comics application was the highest-grossing application in the App Store. Also in 2011, comiXology ranked as number 10 in the top 20 grossing iPad apps for year, and also powered two other apps in the top 20 -- Marvel and DC's efforts.

The acquisition is expected to meet all regulatory approvals, and be concluded in the second quarter of 2014.
