Nikon 1 J4 has 20fps continuous shooting with AF, 60fps focus-locked

Nikon has unveiled a new addition to its J-range of Nikon 1 cameras. The J4 follows on from last year's J3 mirrorless camera in terms of size, though its styling has been modified for a slightly squarer appearance, with the 14.2-megapixel sensor switched for an 18.4-megapixel AF CMOS sensor with no low-pass filter and the Expeed 4A image processing engine.

Offering 105 focus points with phase-detection AF and 171 points for contrast-detection AF, the J4 is capable of 20fps continuous shooting with AF tracking, speeding up to 60fps when focus is locked. It will even automatically record 20 frames before or after the shutter-release has been fully pressed in an "Active Selection" mode, giving the photographer more chance of getting the shot.

Video can be recorded at 1080p at 60fps, with in-camera editing options including jump cuts and "4-second movie" included, with the camera also providing the option of taking up to 20 full-size images while a movie is being recorded. On the back is a three-inch 1037k-dot display with touch screen controls, its ISO range goes from 100 to 12,800, connects over Wi-Fi to mobile devices, and it eschews the traditional SD card memory for microSD.

Nikon has not revealed when the Nikon 1 J4 will be released, nor how much it will cost, though as a guide, the J3 at launch sold for $600.
