Windows Phone 8.1 supports iOS Passbook files

updated 03:07 pm EDT, Mon April 14, 2014

Reason tech works a mystery

The Windows Phone 8.1 preview version of Microsoft Wallet actually supports Passbook files from iOS, reports say. iMore notes that Microsoft has developed a method of extracting information from a Passbook file. The individual passes are said to be composed of generic data, and simply rendered by the container app, much like a browser renders a webpage.

One key question however is said to be how Microsoft is bypassing the code signatures on Passbook cards. Microsoft could simply be accepting Apple certificates, or even accepting any pass signed or unsigned. Another possibility is that the two companies have an agreement, but there appears to be no way for Wallet to update Passbook passes on the fly, something that is possible in iOS and potentially crucial when traveling.
