Photos of rumored Amazon smartphone prototype with six cameras leak

Five front-facing cameras shown in leaked photographs of Amazon smartphone

Photographs of what is believed to be Amazon's first smartphone have surfaced. Encased in what appears to be a protective casing to prevent the external appearance from being leaked, the images of an alleged prototype device seem to suggest that the smartphone will have a 3D interface powered by multiple front-facing camera sensors.

The photographs from BGR seemingly shows a total of five round camera-style sensors around the screen. While one is a standard camera sensor, the four in the corners are low-power infrared versions used to track the user's face and eyes, allowing it to work out what is the correct perspective of a scene, menu, or object it needs to display. In theory, this will give a 3D effect without the need for 3D glasses nor a parallax layer.

Report sources note it will use the 3D system in the lock screen using specially-made wallpapers, core elements of the user interface the mapping application, and within Amazon's various stores. Third-party app developers will also have access to the cameras, using a set of APIs.

Other than the 3D effect, the unnamed smartphone is said to have a rear 13-megapixel camera, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 2GB of Ram, and a 720p 4.7-inch display.

While a release date was not revealed, previous reports suggest that Amazon is planning for a launch towards the end of June, with shipments set to start sometime before the end of September.

BGR's sources also claim that a second smartphone will be offered by Amazon. A lower-specification offering without the 3D capability will be launched, though sometime after the main device's launch.
