Samsung data center fire causes service outage for apps, websites

updated 06:39 am EDT, Mon April 21, 2014

No reported fatalities in South Korean data center fire

A number of Samsung online services were unavailable for several hours this weekend, after major incident at a Samsung data center used for backing-up data. A fire at the Samsung SDS building in Gwacheon, South Korea caused the outage, which reportedly affected smartphones, tablets, and Smart TV apps that connect to the center in order to function, with services restored hours later.

The fire started at around 12:20pm local time on Sunday, reports Wikitree, starting from the fourth floor and burning for seven hours. Despite the severity of the fire, local reports claim there are no fatalities, though Samsung states that one third-party employee was taken to hospital for light injuries.

Samsung users were only lightly affected by the incident, with an outage lasting until 6:15am EST on Sunday morning. Duties carried out by the data center have been reallocated to others in the country, and will most likely affect Samsung's payment and Internet services for a while, until it can make repairs to the location and get alternative data center services up and running.

Authorities and Samsung are investigating the cause of the fire.

The fire is the latest life-threatening incident for the electronics producer to deal with. Last month, one employee died after safety systems in a production facility malfunctioned and attempted to put out a non-existent fire, flooding the area with carbon dioxide. Last year, two separate incidents involving hydrofluoric acid leaks caused the death of one employee and the hospitalization of a number of others.
