Amazon rumored to create 'Prime Data' plan for upcoming smartphone

updated 01:28 pm EDT, Fri April 25, 2014

Prime Data could provide free streaming of Amazon content, discounted service

Amazon may offer its own branded data service along with its rumored smartphone, according to a report. The specialized data plan, tentatively titled "Prime Data," could allow for Amazon customers to stream movies, TV shows, and music to the device over a cellular network at no extra charge, and could launch at the same time as the smartphone itself.

Multiple sources of BGR claim the data plan is being worked on, though the exact details of the plan could not be confirmed. From what is known, sources speculate that, aside from free streaming of Amazon-sourced content, the plan could simply provide free allocations of data based on Amazon purchases, or a simple data plan that is heavily discounted.

The free streaming of content sounds similar to Sponsored Data, a program AT&T introduced in January that allowed companies to cover the cost of data used for accessing certain types of content. It is claimed Amazon would not be using the Sponsored Data scheme itself, due to "API limitations" and details relating to co-branding, but it is suggested AT&T and Amazon could negotiate for a similar arrangement built for Amazon's requirements.

Last week, images of what is believed to be Amazon's smartphone were leaked, showing what could be multiple cameras usable for a glasses-free 3D effect. Current rumors of the specification suggest it will have a rear 13-megapixel camera, a 720p 4.7-inch display, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, with a launch thought to take place towards the end of June for a September release.
