UK streamer Bloom.fm closing down, cites iAd ban, investor turmoil

Nascent mobile streaming left with no sources of funding

UK radio streaming service Bloom.fm will be shutting down. The double blow of being banned from Apple's iAd advertising service, in conjunction with investor pullout is causing the shutdown of the streaming service, which founder Oleg Fomenko calls "a poetically crappy turn of events." Bloom.fm was a London-based music service aimed primarily at mobile users which combined free genre and artist based streaming channels, music discovery tools, a local library player, and a catalog of over 22 million tracks. The service allowed a user play back some saved songs from the service for offline playback, with the limit being determined by subscription level.

According to Bloom PR, the streamer was been banned from advertising on Apple's iAd network due to it being in competition with iTunes Radio. Bloom claimed to have spent £2,000 ($3,374) per month on iAd spots. Bloom PR noted that Apple told Bloom that it constituted "a competitive service to iTunes Radio and it is against Apple policy."

At closure, the company claimed to have 1,158,914 registered users, with an unknown amount on paid tiers. The company says that the investment pullout is "so out of the blue that we don't have time to find new investment."

I don't see how the iAd thing played any sort of factor in the shutdown. It's not like iAd is the only ad network operating on iOS -- there's that Google thing the kids seem to like, for example -- and their budget on it was fiddling small change. Sounds like they're trying to soften the loss of the investor by taking a cheap shot at Apple because they're made at them. Maybe change the name of the service from "Bloom" to "Sour Grapes" ...
