Apple hiring 'buzz' manager to get celebrity product placements

updated 12:56 pm EDT, Fri May 2, 2014

May signal attempt to compete with Samsung

Apple has posted a new job opening for a "buzz marketing manager," notes the Houston Chronicle's Dwight Silverman. "This new Buzz Marketing role is primarily responsible for constant and compelling exposure of Apple products with high-profile users, especially those in film and television," the listing explains. This suggests that Apple wants its products seen in the hands of more celebrities, regardless of whether or not they would normally be fans.

The job may be a response to this year's Oscar ceremony, which was sponsored by Samsung and culminated in a PR stunt in which host Ellen Dengeneres took a group "selfie" using a Galaxy Note 3. The company went to the extent of training Degeneres on how to take the shot.

Apple is used to having its products in movies and TV shows, but claims it never pays for any placements. Instead it has traditionally counted on a mix of its popularity with filmmakers and the prominent logos it stamps on the backs of devices.

Apple, please stay classy. Don't pay celebrities to use your products. Enough of them already do. Consumersknow this kind of thing is tacky and paid for. They're not dumb.

All those celebrities use iPhone. Samsung has to pay any of them to use their crappy phone....it's like hiring Tom Crusie to drive Hyundai (end of his career if he does that). Apple iPhone itself is the celebrity.

I notice that Steve Ballmer ditched his Windows Phone for an iPhone as soon as he left the company.

I will flip if Steve Ballmer got hired by Apple.
