Small format gaming computers offer desktop performance for under $900

Cyberpower, the gaming-focused PC manufacturer, has announced the release of two small format PCs based on Intel and AMD cores. The Fang Mini systems offer full desktop gaming performance at a fraction of the size, with prices starting at $800.

The basis for both the machines is a small format case which brings the PCs down to 4.5 x 4.3 x 2.4 inches. With included VESA mounting options, the machines could be tucked away from sight. Each system contains 8GB of RAM, a 1TB 7200 RPM hard drive, and come with copies of Windows 8.1 and Office 365.

Up to 16GB of SO-DIMM DDR3L RAM can be installed in the machines, which also have additional space for a 2.5-inch drive or an mSATA SSD. Inputs and outputs for the machines consist of HDMI, miniDisplayPort, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, four USB 3.0 ports and a 3.5mm jack.

At a base price of $800, the Fang Mini R9 will be based around the quad-core AMD A8-5557M 2.1 GHz APU and Radeon R9 M275X 2 GB discrete GPU. This is the same configuration offered in Gigabyte's small format Brix Gaming system. The Intel-based box with a quad-core i3 3.2 GHz processor and Iris Pro 5200 graphics will run a buyer $890 at the lowest option level.
