Android 4.4 not heading to 3G models of Samsung Galaxy S III, mini

Low amount of RAM at issue for KitKat on Galaxy S III, US LTE versions unaffected

Samsung has decided against bringing the latest iteration of Android, version 4.4, to international models of the Galaxy S III and the S3 Mini. Despite previous plans to bring Android KitKat to the device, as well as allowing for Sprint to release its variant of the software, Samsung advises the two devices will not be updated outside of the United States.

A statement received by SamMobile claims that the Galaxy S3 and S3 mini 3G versions cannot effectively support the update, due to the amount of available RAM. The international variants of both devices ship with 1GB of RAM, while the US models of the Galaxy S III use 2GB of RAM. The remaining US models of the LTE version with 2GB of RAM are still set to receive the update.

The decision to not add Android KitKat to the Galaxy S III could be considered a misstep, as Android 4.4 is billed to run "comfortably" on devices with as little as 512MB of RAM. While this may be true, the majority of Android implementations used by smartphone producers use a customized version of the software, bloating the hardware requirements. Those looking to add KitKat to their smartphone may have to take an alternative route to a software upgrade, such as using CyanogenMod.
