Fifth-generation Intel chips not expected to ship by July, August

Intel will be bringing its first chips running the "Broadwell" architecture in time for the holiday season, the head of the company has advised. Chief Executive Brian Krzanich claimed at the weekend's Maker Faire in San Mateo, California that, though it will be out before the end of the year, computers running the new fifth-generation processors will not likely ship in time for Back to School shopping.

Speaking to Reuters, Krzanich advised "I can guarantee for holiday, and not at the last second of holiday. Back to School - that's a tight one. Back to School you have to really have it on-shelf in July, August. That's going to be tough." Despite setbacks in implementing its new manufacturing technology for the 14nm-process chip, Krzanich claimed the company was on track to ship the Broadwell chips on schedule.

The Broadwell chips will apparently reduce the power requirements of the processor, offering up to a 30-percent reduction in power compared to the equivalent Haswell versions. The lower power usage could result in cooler devices using the processors, as well as potentially increasing the battery life of notebooks.
