Market-wide deployment of Cox gigabit service expected by end of 2016

Cox Communications has detailed where it plans to roll out its residential gigabit Internet service. Following an earlier announcement stating it would be launching the high-speed service this year, Cox has revealed it will start construction projects in Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Omaha, with both new and existing neighborhoods in the regions being prepared to receive the improved connections.

Other existing Cox service areas have not been forgotten, as the company hopes to make a "market-wide deployment" of the gigabit-speed connections by the end of 2016. Aside from the gigabit connections, it will also provide the same speeds to "units in select new condominiums and apartments," with Wi-Fi also set to be available in common areas of the developments.

Areas that won't see the gigabit speeds this year will still see some benefits. Cox claims it will double the speeds on its most popular service tiers for all customers this year. Its High-speed Internet Preferred will increase from 25Mbps to 50Mbps, with Internet Premier jumping from 50Mbps to 100Mbps, with the increases affecting more than 70 percent of Cox's high-speed Internet customers.

"We are excited about our road map to offer gigabit speeds to all of our residential customers," advised President Pat Esser. "Starting today, we will begin deploying new technology and infrastructure that will give customers the choice of gigabit speeds in all markets we serve.

Cox also announced plans to expand its Wi-Fi service in the Phoenix Metropolitan area and the Greater Las Vegas area, following the recent launch of Wi-Fi in Omaha. The launches now bring the total number of Wi-Fi hotspots Cox customers can access to more than 250,000.
