Family cheering on baseball team brings Samsung Lee out of coma

Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee has regained consciousness after entering a coma two weeks ago. The 72-year-old chairman, hospitalized after a heart attack following a 60-hour cardiac procedure related to acute myocardial infarction, is said by the medical team of the Samsung Medical Center to be recovering smoothly, and his body temperature is back to normal levels.

The Korea Herald reports the prognosis for Lee's cognitive functions is "hopeful, taking into account his surgery, with his vital organs remaining in a "perfectly" normal state. It is claimed Lee awoke from the coma after hearing family members cheering a Samsung Lions baseball game being shown on a nearby television.

Samsung does have a succession plan in place, and may prompt the company to hand over the reins sooner rather than later. A separate report claims the Samsung Group share prices have jumped across the board following the hospitalization, raising investor confidence that Samsung would "take pro-shareholder steps" to expedite managerial succession to Lee's children.
